Meet CLARA! She’s still adjusting to her new surroundings and is still a little nervous about this thing called Toronto life. We’re looking for a patient but confident owner who will continue to work on her socialization. With a shy dog it’s easy to want to overcompensate with love (baby voice… we’re all guilty) but the key to her success will be boundaries/a confident leader who doesn’t reinforce her nervous behaviours. CLARA’s fosters say that breaking down her walls and getting her to trust you is the best feeling ever and that you’ll love finally being able to give her a belly rub or seeing her goofy side. She’s a gentle, docile and quiet dog who is well behaved in the home and could live in an apartment as long as she gets enough exercise. Taking her for a walk is becoming easier as she gains more confidence but new areas can still be overwhelming so it’s best to have her double leashed (collar and harness) as she can be a flight risk. She is super curious on her walks which is great but she shouldn’t be allowed to zig-zag/pull all over the place and roam freely. Proper leash skills are a great way to show her that you’re a confident owner and have her follow your lead. For example, keep her on a short leash at a good pace and only have her sniff grassy areas freely every 5 mins or so or when you give the ok. You can use whatever command you want – roam, sniff, even Miley Cyrus if you’re down – as long as it’s consistent! CLARA is crate trained and will hoard all your socks in her crate but has been responding well to correction in the home. She does also like to follow her handler around and needs to build some independence. She’s eager to please and would be great in training classes! She is very nervous around other dogs but this will get better with socialization and proper intros as she did live with other dogs in the DR. She hasn’t been tested with cats and should only go to a home with older, dog-savvy kids. Fun Fact: Clara LOVES chin scratches so be prepared to give plenty!
